My first contact with orthodontics was when I was in primary school. I remember being over the moon when I got my first sparkling expander. And that pretty much marked the first step in my path to dental school and then to the department of orthodontics.
I studied dentistry in Hacettepe University, Turkey, and after finishing dental school I did another 6 years of study in the same university to become an Orthodontist and earn a PhD.
After those 11 years of dental and orthodontic training I enrolled in Boston University to conduct further research in the science of bone and tooth movement.
I spent a year carrying out postdoctoral research, and was invited to teach at the Boston University Dental School’s Department of Orthodontics. I remained in Boston teaching as an Assistant Professor and seeing patients for 5 years. It was during this period that I teamed up with Dr. Serge Dibart, a world-renowned leader in accelerated orthodontics (Piezocision), and together we developed new and innovative techniques. I have been publishing and lecturing on accelerated orthodontics extensively in many parts of the world ever since.
In 2008, I was offered the opportunity to take up the role as the first program director for Boston University’s newly-established orthodontic program in Dubai, UAE.
The time I spent with Boston University in Boston and Dubai was challenging and enjoyable, and brought me into contact with many brilliant people. And my connection with BU as an adjunct professor and lecturer continues to this day. But when the opportunity arose to move to Istanbul to work with one of the best aesthetic dentists in the world, Dr Galip Gurel, I simply couldn't resist and headed home to Turkey. Practising orthodontics in connection with professionals practising aesthetic dentistry was a great experience and education, and I participated in new treatments for developing and creating many exceptional smiles. And that experience taught me to incorporate every aspect of dentistry, facial aesthetics and art in orthodontic treatments.
After a number of years in Istanbul, another great opportunity arose - this time to move to London. To continue practising orthodontics in the UK, I of course first had to pass a set of rigorous exams to obtain my registration with the General Dental Council (GDC). After passing these exams I was able to start seeing patients, and this led to the opening of my private practice at Wimpole Street.
My approach has always been to provide the best possible personalised orthodontic treatment. Every individual has unique features that need to be understood and addressed . My job is not only to straighten teeth but also to create harmony of the face.
I believe a confident smile has the power to change everything.
