What types of treatments are available at Boston Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry, which treats misaligned teeth and jaws. Orthodontic conditions have been with us ever since humanity existed, which is proven by a range of archeological samples that have been shown to have either orthodontic conditions, or some early forms of treatments for them. Even the famous ancient greek physician, Hippocrates has written about orthodontic conditions! Orthodontics however, developed into its form we know today in the past 3-4 centuries. Today, the most widely spread conditions are treatable with excellent success rates. Orthodontic conditions include overbites, underbites, crossbites, gaps between teeth, crooked teeth, malocclusions, etc. If you suspect that you have an orthodontic condition, contact Boston Orthodontics, our orthodontics clinic in Marylebone.
Invisalign is one of the most well known and well established brands of invisible aligners. These are personalised moulds of the patient’s dental arches fitted on the teeth perfectly after a 3D recording of the oral cavity, free from ionising radiation, such as X-ray. A series of these is made throughout the treatment depending on the type and severity of the condition. This allows the necessary pressure to be exerted incrementally, which minimises discomfort. Invisalign aligners are removable, so you can enjoy your favourite foods and beverages without worrying about food getting stuck in your braces. The only drawback of Invisalign is that it is not suitable for every patient: severe conditions cannot be treated with Invisalign and some other factors, such as round, small or too large teeth may also exclude patients from getting Invisalign. These conditions require the implementation of fixed braces with brackets, however this can be made very discrete too. If you would like to get Invisalign, book a consultation session at Boston Orthodontics, where you can get a range of orthodontic treatments in Marylebone.
Fixed braces can be a great solution for conditions not treatable by Invisalign. Traditionally, these were made out of metals, such as stainless steel. However, due to both aesthetic and comfort reasons metal braces are increasingly replaced by their ceramic alternatives. These have the same structure and functionality of metal braces, they only differ in the materials they are made out of. Different components of the invisible fixed braces are made out of different materials: the brackets are made out of ceramic, with a near identical colour to the colour of your teeth. The arch wires are made out of a transparent plastic, which makes these braces much less visible than metal braces. Unfortunately these are not removable unlike Invisalign, therefore you must abstain from certain types of foods and beverages that cause damage to your teeth and the braces, like hard foods, sticky foods or sugary soft drinks. You also have to brush your teeth with purpose built toothbrushes.
Incognito is a brand of invisible lingual braces. These work similarly to fixed braces, and are suitable for similar conditions. The major difference is that the brackets of lingual braces are stuck to the inside of your teeth, rather than the outside as with traditional fixed braces with brackets. This makes Incognito braces barely visible.
